Text Appearing Before Image:
esions are frequent and add much to the danger and difficultiesof operative treatment. Duration of the disease. This is variable, the limits ordinarily being one tothree years. The duration depends somewhat on the kind of tumor (the softer thetumor the more rapid the growth), upon the age of the patient (the youngerthe patient the more rapid the growth) and upon the proximity to child-birth—those carcinomata appearing within one year after parturition progressing veryrapidly. These are only general rules, to which there are, of course, exceptions. Effect of pregnancy. Sometimes carcinoma of the cervix may appear whilethe patient is pregnant, or occasionally pregnancy may take place in the earlystage of carcinoma of the cervix. In either case the effect of pregnancy is to hastenthe progress of the carcinoma. The softening of the tissues and the congestionassociated with pregnancy, seem to favor rapid extension of the malignant dis-ease. DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSIS OF MALIGNANT DISEASE 667

This slight streak ofblood is seen usually after extra exertion (extra work, long walk, lifting) or aftera douche or after coitus. It is especially liable to appear within 24 hours aftercoitus. A history of such spotting of the discharge or of the clothing, calls fora most careful examination, that the presence or absence of carcinoma of thevaginal surface of the cervix or of the interior of the cervix, may be certainlydetermined. In giving the symptoms and the diagnosis of this disease, I shall speak nearlyaltogether of the early stage. It is in this stage that the diagnosis is most diffi-cult and it is in this stage that the diagnosis is most important, for operation thenwill,
