Open into the pelvic cavity by posterior vaginal incision,and let the infected peritoneal fluid run out. Palpate the uterus and appendagesand if a collection of pus is found, evacuate it. Put in a large-sized rubber drain-age-tube and pack the pelvis lightly with washed iodoform gauze, letting the endsextend out into the vagina (Figs. 635, 636). Gauze is then placed in the vaginaand a large dressing applied over the vulva and the patient put to bed. The gauze in the vagina may be removed in twenty-four hours, the vaginacleansed and fresh gauze inserted or douches given as preferred. The gauze inthe pelvis should be left in place two to four days. When it is removed, re-intro-duce the rubber drainage-tube, to insure good drainage and keep the vaginalwound from closing too soon. b. Abdominal Se
