Lhe oilreservoir was connected by 1/8 copperpiping to a 40 inch mercury manometer.A series of readings, ascending anddescending were taken, and the averageof those read which checked very closelywere taken as the true calibration data. After the calibration was made, theweights which had been previously numberedwere weighed on a EAIRBAKES platform scale. 13. The results of this calibration are given on thenext page. LTote: .before calibrating the copperdiaphragm, all the air v;as expelled by-running oil thru the reservoir, andpiping. 14. The tachometerfor the horse-power meter was calibrated in themachine shop in the following manner:- The thick bottom of the gear housing A,(see fig. £.), was clamped in a vise, justfirmly enough to prevent vibration; then, one end of a length of flexible shaftingwas coupled to the shaft supporting gear 1,and the other end was fastened in the jawsof a universal chuck, fastened to the spin-die of a high speed lathe. A thread, partlywound on wheel C, had a key suspended at itsfree end which was placed along the edge ofa steel scale clamped in a vertical position. As the speed of rotation increases, the planeof the governor weight tends to assume a po-sition perpendicular to the axis of the shaft. At any constant speed, the position of thegovernor weight plane will make a constantangle with the axis, because the force ofthe centrifugal action will be balanced bythe tension of the governor spring.
