al an almost ludicrous aspect. TheSemnovitliecus frontatus likewise, has a blackish facewith a long black beard, and a large naked spot onthe forehead of a bluish-white colour. The face ofMacacus lasiotus is dirty flesh-coloured, with a definedred spot on each cheek. The appearance of Cerco-cebus f^thioys is grotesque, with its black face, wdiitewhiskers and collar, chesnut head, and a large nakedwhite spot over each eyelid. In very many species, thebeard, whiskers, and crests of hair round the face are ofa different colour from the rest of the head, and whendifferent, are always of a lighter tint,** being often pure *•* I observed this fact in the Zoological Gardens; and numerouscases may be seen in tie coloured plates in Geoifroy St.-Hilaire andF. Cuvier, Hist. Nat. des Mammiferes, tcm. i. 1824. Chap. XVIII. QUADRUMANA. 309 white, sometimes bright yellow, or reddish. The wholeface of the South American Braclmjurus calvus is of aglowing scarlet hue ; but this colour does not appear

Fig. 75. Cercopithecus petaurista (from Brehm). 310 SEXUAL SELECTION : MAMMALS. Part U. until the animal is nearly mature.^^ The naked skinof the face differs wonderfully in colour in the variousspecies. It is often brown or flesh-colour, with partsperfectly white, and often as black as that of themost sooty negro. In the Brachyurus the scarlet tintis brighter than that of the most blushing Caucasiandamsel. It is sometimes more distinctly orange thanin any Mongolian, and in several species it is blue, passing into violet or grey. In all the species knounto Mr. Bartlett, in which the adults of both sexes havestrongly-coloured faces, the colours are dull or absentduring early youth. This likewise holds good with theMandrill and Khesus, in which the face and the posteriorparts of the body are brilliantly coloured in one sexalone. In these latter cases we have every reason tobelieve that the colours were acquired through sexualselection; and w^e are naturallv led to extend the sameview to
