Text Appearing Before Image:
d some of the finest work of the Gobe-lins was undertaken, but the nudities of Boucherand the frivolities of Watteau were the fashion, and gave lasting imprint to the Louis XVperiod. Occasionally also may be noted in thisperiod the unmistakable marks of the Chineseinfluence, and upon such occasions the quasidecorator is inclined to criticise what he regardsas an anachronism. On the contrary, the in-troduction of these cascades and grottoes andbits of mountains and pagodas was natural tothe development of the period. About 1720 Louis XV despatched an em-bassy to the Emperor of China with goods ofrare value, charged with a commission to en-courage the opening of more extensive traderelations. The emperor was cordial in his re-ception of the kings messengers, and returnedmagnificent gifts lavishly decorated. This in-cident rendered the Chinese style fashionablein the upper circles of France, and for sometime thereafter Chinese vases appeared inFrench textile designs juxtaposed to dragcns.
Text Appearing After Image:
LOLIS .W landscapes with curious Chinese perspective and pig-tailedsons of the Far East. It had its rage and passed, but therelingered for many years the subtle influence of China inthe use of plant forms drawn from nature, flowers and leavesrendered with the full effect of light and shade, fruit also, cherries and plums, and a fantastic form of floral was generouslyadopted, together with architectural fragments, cascades andrococo details. It was all a capricious, whimsical style.
