Dr. Jacob Gould Schur-man, president of the institution for twenty-eightyears, had already resigned, and Albert W. Smith, agraduate of 1878 and one of our early Stanford fac-ulty, was acting president until a permanent headshould be chosen. The Comstocks entertained meat their charming cottage in the forest across FallCreek, and old friends and new vied with each otherin making me welcome. I had the pleasure also ofcalling on Minnie Mitchell Barnes at the old brickfarmhouse on the East Hill, to which we boys ofthe Grove used often to find our way on Sundayevenings.
