He was agood Christian man in an age when so many were wicked.Like Washington he was a great warrior, never cast downin defeat nor cruel to the enemy when he had conquered.He was unselfish, for he lived only to serve his people. Inaddition to all this, Alfred was a great statesman, improvingthe army, building up a navy, erecting walls about thecities, and making good laws for his people.
