The dis-tribution is based on assumption that the individuals of thespecies were uniformly distributed throughout the 3 m. level inwhich they were found. This assumption is peculiarly incorrectfor D. pulicaria, since the species is limited to the region of thethermocline. It is often confined within a space of 1 meter,or even less, yet it often passes beyond these narrow lim-its, as is indicated by the fact that not inconsiderable numbersmay be found in two or even three levels. While, therefore, thediagram spreads out the distribution of the species during thesummer more than is correct, the general relations are wellenough indicated by its lines. It will be seen that in the latterpart of August more than 65 per cent, of the species was foundbetween 9 and 12 meters and that the species moved downwardduring Septemb
