The processes were watched with seemingly greatinterest by the guests on board, and after a shortinterval had elapsed, the trawl was drawn up bythe deck engine. The anxious crowd gathered onthe bridge, and as fathom after fathom of the linecame in, the eager throng held their breath inexpectation of what was coming. They were, how-ever, not kept long in suspense. First appeared theshackle, then the trawl itself, with a few specimensof life from the bottom, including fish of variouskinds, shells, stones, and mud. Water-bottles werelowered, and specimens obtained from variousdepths. The mode of taking serial temperatureswas illustrated. After this lively scene, in which the different DREDGING PICNIC IN YEDO BAY. 303 opinions of the learned in such matters were oftenamusingly expressed to their lady friends, it wastime to adjourn for lunch, which afterwards finishedup with a dance ; so on the whole we had a mostenjoyable time. It was after five before the vesselreturned to her anchorage.
