Flying Buttresses, Cologne Cathedral CATHEDRALS OF THE RHINELAND 121 made from century to century being in the style prevail-ing at the time, the cathedral is a record of the history ofecclesiastical architecture, and hence one of the most in-teresting in Europe for the historian. Save for the Gothicupper story of the large western tower, the higher portionsof the building are Romanesque, and as the Gothic chapelsranged along its sides are concealed by the surroundingbuildings, this single visible Gothic feature does not im-press the beholder. The situation of the splendid churchis most unfortunate, the nearby houses and businessblocks extending to within a few feet of its walls on allsides, with the result that no satisfactory idea of the wholecan be obtained* On the bronze doors of the chief en-trance, which is approached by a narrow alley leadingfrom the city market place between the encroachinghouses, is an inscription stating that they were manu-factured in the year 9ZS for Archb
