Many of these pieces are wonderfully brilliant incolor^ and had they been placed where they could tellmore strongly and be more clearly seen^ they wouldnecessarily have dominated everything else^ and St«Mark^s would have degenerated into a scaffolding dis-playing pictures in mosaic* The placing of the mosaics isone cause of the beauty of the interior of St, Mark^s, aswell as of the exterior* But it is the color scheme and thelightings the broad, flat, or round spaces, opposed to therichness of the carved and modeled surfaces which pro-duce its unique effect* The charm of the surface and thetexture of the marbles in which everything below themosaics is encased is not a main factor in producing this:the pleasure to be gained therefrom forms a sort of under-current not at first consciously reached* Very differentin this is St* Mark^s from many other Italian churchesthat rely upon the beauty of marble for their
