hed in hersplendours, and is quite happy. Whilst admiring herhandsome rooms, I would not exchange my little studyfor all Helens salons. There were no sons born of thisunion, and the Grand Duke predeceased his wife by manyyears, dying in 1848. The Grand Duchess Helen was oneof the few members of the Imperial family for whom IvanGolovine in his Russia under Nicholas /. has a good wordto say. Golovine has also a word of faint praise for the GrandDuke Michael, of whom he says that he has a kind dis-position, but a rough exterior, and has a propensity tomake puns. It is affirmed that he has been seen to weepat seeing Russian soldiers slain in Poland, while his brotherConstantine rubbed his hands, saying, What do youthink of my Poles ? It is not said whether Michaelshed tears for the soldiers whom he sacrificed at Brailoff, but it is pretended that he would not wear the Order ofSt. George, conferred upon him for the deplorable siege ofthat place. He is, however, the greatest
