La Storta has probably altered but little since thetime when Guido halted there on that winters night.It is a pleasant little hamlet, consisting of a few olddwellings, a large farmhouse and the ancient inn. Theinn is a low building, of no mean size, with a porticofacing the road, and with ample outhouses and stablesclustered around it. It is still a busy place, for it is aninn of excellent repute. 62.—PERUGIA: A DARK ENTRY The Inn at Merluzza rejoiced the hearts of travellers in centuries gone by,for La Storta is the last stage in the journey to Rome(Plate 31). La Storta is an oasis in the Campagna, and whenwell clear of the hamlet the features of this open countrycan be well appreciated. It is a wide, undulating land,naked and bleak, immense, monotonous, and in coloura weary, faded green. This is the Campagna in January.In the spring it is a little brightened by flowers. Inthe summer, again, it is parched and brown. On allsides, for miles and miles, is the same vast ocean ofwaving downs, smooth as a heaving sea when the windhas dropped, without a house in sight and relieved onlyby occasional trees, by some stretches of wood, by a fewgreen glens, by deep gullies which recall the dongas onthe South African veldt, and by the long white, hedge-less road.
