Edward I. at length conquered Scotland and securedpeace for the border, but then Wallace roused thefighting spirit of his countrymen, fell upon the countyand slew its sons, destroyed its homesteads, andplundered everywhere. Never was the unfortunate landin such a terrible condition. The Scots spared not eitherlives or Churchs treasure, until at length in 1303Edwards victories brought the county rest.
