hese principles was im-mediately prepared and unanimously adopted,and the whole scope of the Churchs missionary * Agitation looking toward the formation of a missionarysociety had begun as early as 1815. In 1817 the Rev. JosephE. Andrus, of the Eastern Diocese, offered for missionarywork among the heathen. As we had no organization underwhich he could be sent, he applied to the Church MissionarySociety of England, who responded, suggesting the formationof a missionary society in the Episcopal Church of the UnitedStates, and offering by way of encouragement to pay $1,000into its treasury when established. In 1820 an abortiveattempt was made, which was followed in 1821 by a regularorganization bearing the present title and consisting of themembers of the General Convention and such persons as paidat least $3.00 annually. The business was conducted by aBoard of Directors who met annually and a smaller executivecommittee which met more frequently. There was a treasurerand two secretaries.
