Text Appearing Before Image:
are formed two curved steamcylinders in which the curved pistons work. The steamenters and leaves the base of each cylinder throughports in the shaft, which forms a cyHndrical valveworking in the bearing as a seating. On the revolution of the shafts the pistons recipro-cate in their cylinders in much the same way as in anordinary engine, and the valve arrangement is suchthat while each piston is receding from its cyHnder thesteam pressure is driving it, and during the in-strokeof each, its cyKnder is in communication with the ex-haust. There are thus four single-acting cylindersmaking each a double stroke for one revolution of thedriving-shaft. The engine has no dead centres, and hasbeen at 1,000 revolutions per minute. It is not necessary to describe other of the rotaryengines that have been made along more or less similarHues by numerous inventors, models of which are forthe most part, as in the case of those just described, tobe seen more commonly in museums than in practical (122)
Text Appearing After Image:
ROTARY ENGINES. The three types of rotary engines here shown are similar in principle, and noneof them is of great practical value, though the upper figure shows an engine that hasmet with a certain measure of commercial success. THE MASTER WORKER workshops. Reference may be made, however, to arotary engine which was invented by a Mr. Hoffman,of Buffalo, New York, about the beginning of thetwentieth century, an example of which was put intoactual operation in running the machinery of a shopin Buffalo, in 1905. This engine consists of a solid elliptical shaft of steel, fastened to an axle at one side of its centre, which axisis also the shaft of the cylinder, which revolves aboutthe central ellipse in such a way that at one part of therevolution the cylinder surface fits tightly against theellipse, while the opposite side of the cylinder suppliesa free chamber between the elHpse and the cylinder walls.Running the length of the cylinder are two curved piecesof steel, Hke longitudinal sec
