Text Appearing Before Image:
tlast spoke of the navicular disease. Now it sohappened (and here I must expose my ignorance),that though I knew there was such a joint in the footas this, yet I was ignorant of its technical appellation ^;and therefore was obliged to ask for an explanation, which, in the most obliging and scientific manner, heinstantly furnished me with ; at the same time inform-ing me that the discovery of this disease, as the seatof navicular lameness, was due to a brother of his, whopractised the veterinary art at Croydon in Surrey. Being all for demonstration, when I can get it, andconvinced that there are but two ways of obtainingknowledge—one from our own experience, and theother from the experience of others—I obtained fromhis brother an introduction to Mr Turner, and waitedon him at his residence at Croydon, where I found hewas the son of an eminent practitioner of his art. ^ I knew this bone by the name of the nut, or shuttle bone, andwas also aware of the joint it formed with the flexor.
Text Appearing After Image:
ON THE FOOT 141 On my arrival at Croydon Mr Turner was preparedwith one dissection of the leg of a horse just killed,to show me the original structure of the interior ofthe foot; and with another denuded of hair and fleshso as to enable him to point out to me the situationand office of the navicular bone and joint, wherein,he contends, the seat of the disease called founder,or groggy lameness, is invariably to be seen ; and bythe very clear and able manner—suited to my capacityon such subjects—in which he unfolded the evidencenecessary to estabhsh the fact, I shall be able to detailit, I trust, in such language as may be intelligible tothe reader, being similar to that in which it wasconveyed to me. The navicular bone has its derivation from the Latinword navis, being supposed to resemble a boat;but, in my opinion, the old appellation of shuttlebone need not have been disturbed, as the resembl-ance here is the stronger of the two. By that wonder-ful organ—the great flexor tendon
