ilARYLAXD WEATHER SERVICE 489 The Weather of October 1. The iirst day of October falls within a period likely to have some ofthe most delightful weather of the year. With an early morning tem-perature of about 5-i° and an afternoon temperature of 72°, the averagefor the day is 63°. The highest temperature for the day, occurring in1889, was 89°, and the lowest was 39°, recorded in 1899. The record ofcloudiness shows a high percentage of bright clear days: There werenineteen clear days, eleven partly cloudy days, and but five cloudy daysin the entire period from 1871 to 1907. Eain occurred on but sevendays of the 37 anniversaries, while the precipitation was evenly distrib-uted through the period. The early part of October is the period of theyeai- most free from rain. The winds have been light and mostly froma northerly direction. The Weather of Thanksgiving Day. Cloudy to partly cloudy weather, with moderate winds from the north-west, has prevailed on this day during the past 37
