en them uphold a great loggia, into a centralspace and an ambulatory. The piers are in their lowerparts lined with slabs of African marble, and the capitals, both below and above in the loggia, are capped with mostexquisite Byzantine capitals. In the presbytery stands the altar consisting of slabs ofsemi-transparent alabaster, the altar stone itself supportedby four columns, the frontal carved with a cross betweentwo sheep. Across the apse behind the altar are setbeautiful low fretted screens. The vault of the apse, thelunettes and the walls are entirely encrusted with gorgeousmosaics. In the curve of the triumphal arch throughwhich the presbytery is approached we see, amid muchdecorative ornament, fifteen circular discs containing thebusts of Our Lord, the twelve Apostles, S. Gervasius andS. Protasius. Beneath are two monuments made upfrom antique fragments in the sixteenth century ; thecolumns coming from the old baldacchino here and thereliefs from a frieze in the Temple of Neptune.

Above, the vault is filled with ornament, amidwhich three angels uphold the Agnus Dei. In the apse itself, which we enter under a secondtriumphal arch upon the face of which we see the twocities, Jerusalem and Bethlehem, and above some wonder-ful ornament, is Our Lord enthroned, an angel on eitherhand with S. Vitalis and S. Ecclesius. Beneath uponeither side are the two great mosaic pictures, the mostwonderful works of the sixth century that have comedown to us.
