deer. * In the days of the Irish Elk, the climate musthave been almost tropical, for its remains are foundin company with those of the mammoth hippopot-amus and rhinoceros in the caves of the great flesh-eating hyenas and bears.* They then looked at the skeletons of the Hyaeno-don and pictures that show the animals of the periodin their natural surroundings. Turning to the west, they entered the MineralRoom; and, looking quickly at the cases of crystalsand minerals, they particularly noted some speci-mens of crystallised gold from California,— per-fect little octahedral (eight-sided) crystals of puregold held in the midst of a cluster of clear prismaticcrystals of quartz. Some experts, indeed, considerthis the most beautiful specimen of the kind so farknown. Next Doodle pointed out a natural-sized modelof the great CuUinan Diamond, sent as a pres-ent to the Museum by the Premier Transvaal Dia-mond Mining Company of Johannesburg, wherethe diamond, the biggest in the world, was found.

Next they peeped into the Mexican archaeology(Room 402) where all the marvellous stone carv-ings and other relics are so well displayed; but theafternoon was rapidly drawing to a close, and soDoodle led them back to the Elevator. There was only one collection in the Fifth floor toattract them, for they did not care to visit theLibrary,— and this was so very fascinating that itseemed a pity it had been left to the very last. Thechildren were charmed with the vast number ofpretty shells here, large and small, from all partsof the world.
