Text Appearing Before Image:
were ready to fly, the happybirdshad a big family to take care of. Besides these tiny fellows that we call war-blers, there are four bigger birds classed with thefamily, who do not look or act like warblers. They are the golden-crowned thrush or oven-bird, the water-thrush, the Louisiana water-thrush, and the yellow-breasted chat. The Oven-bird gets his name from the nest, which is shaped like an old-fashioned oven. Itis on the ground in the woods, often on the sideof a httle slope. It has a roof over it coveredwith sticks and leaves like the ground around it,so that it is hard to see. If you were to see this bird walking about onthe ground, as he does, you would think him athrush. He is something the same color, and hehas a speckled breast like a thrush. His mate isdressed in the same way, and they have a dullyellowish stripe over the crown. He is the fellow you hear in the woods, calling Teacher ! teacher ! teacher ! He is found allover the United States east of the Rocky Moun-tains.
Text Appearing After Image:
THE WARBLER FAMILY 53 The Yellow-breasted Chat is perhaps thedrollest bird in North America. He is a beauti-ful bird, nearly as large as an oriole, olive greenabove and brilliant yellow below, and his mateis the same. He is found all over the countrysouth of the latitude of Massachusetts. In theWest and California, the chat is a little moregray in color, and has a longer tail. He is calledthe long-tailed chat, but a chat is the samefunny fellow, wherever he is found. He reminds one of a clown, he plays so manyantics, and makes such queer sounds, hardly inthe least like a song. He will whistle, bark likea puppy, mew like a cat, or laugh like an oldman, all in a loud, strange voice. Besides this, the chat is a ventriloquist, thatis, can make his voice appear to come from someplace far ofB, when he is near, and so fool us.The chat has a way of flying up into the air withwings fluttering and legs dangling as if theywere not well fastened on, and looking as if hewould fall to pieces himsel
