A glance at the map, figure lo, will show how general hasbeen the spread from New York City as a center. In consid-ering this map one should remember that a diseased tree ispractically doomed to die. There are numerous diseasedareas, especially in Pennsylvania, which have been foundsince this map was plotted.
Text Appearing After Image:
Fig. 9.—A view showing complete destruction on young chestnut stand in forest area. ■ E. R. Hodson, of the U. S. Forest Service, writing of thisdisease in 1908, says, In Pennsylvania it is no where abun-dant yet, although it exists at Easton, South Bethlehem, andMorrisville, and is repprted as far north as Pocono Mountains, and as far south now as Philadelphia. In recent correspon-dence with the Pennsylvania Commission for the investiga-tion and control of this disease, they have sent us a map show-ing that the area of general infection now includes nearlyone-half of the state. A similar rapid spread has been record-ed in other states and a great united effort should be made toprevent its further progress. March, 1912.)
