A BRAVE DEFENCE TT^AR away in the Philippine Islands is many^ an outpost of our army whose garrison con-sists of only a few men, commanded by a lieu-tenant. One day a few years ago Private Nolanwas pacing back and forth before one of thelonely outposts. Suddenly he saw a horsemangalloping toward the little shelter, too brokendown to be called a fort. The Talus are ontheir way to attack you, he shouted as he drewnear. The soldiers hastily built a barricade ofbags of rice and meal and boxes of provisions.Scarcely was it finished when with fierce war-cries the Talus were upon them. Steady, boys, steady, cried Lieutenant Ray coolly, and what-ever happens save the colors. There weretwenty Talus to one American. But the menbehind the barricade fought bravely, and at nightthe Talus withdrew, and over the three men stillalive proudly floated Old Glory.
