Text Appearing Before Image:
e had an uncomfortablefeeling that the nurse meant to kill him when hehad done his work of amusing Teddy. So whenTeddy was going to get better he watched to seethe sickroom door open, and ran away and camein here. That was the first time mother had heard of thereasons that had induced him to leave his home, and she was very serious. I dont believe that we are liable to measles, she said thoughtfully. But you may give it toAuntie May. She never takes me on her lap, said the blackcat sadly. I ought not to repine, for it is saferfor her, and she is a nice lady. I hunger for aword of affection sometimes, though. The question is, not your need of affection, said mother severely, but the danger of AuntieMays getting measles. As your fur—excuse me—is not very long, perhaps you cannot carry in-fection hke, for instance, Freddy here. We wontworry. I looked every day after that to see if AuntieMay was coming out in red spots like little Teddy, but there was not a single measle that I could see.

THAT BOY WAS ROUGH ANDPLAYED EXPERIMENTS WITH HIM. THE BLACK COMMON CAT 193 It was, however, a nasty scare, and mother saidCharlie was little better than an adventurer, andought not to have come in like that without anyreferences at all. He was a battered old thing, too ; very shabbyand ailing, and seemed to have been very muchknocked about in general. The skin of both hisears showed bare and furless where another cat hadtaken hold of him. His V ig mean tail was brokenoff sharp at the end, where it had been caught ina trap, out hunting for rabbits on the sly. Andhe had had an awful adventure once in France, where he had been taken by some English peopleand left on the farm which they hired for thesummer. There some French child had had thebright idea of putting him on a smart collar oftwisted rushes plaited up into a string. The childmade it a little too big, not big enough for him tobe able to get it off, but big enci gh for him to gethis paw through and nearly his whole front-leg.He
