der crosses, and was removedeither in 1837 or 1842 (both dates are given) to its present position. Inits original situation the arches were enclosed, and contained a number ofbooths. The structure measures about 21 feet across, and is about IS feethigh to the top of the pai-apet, and about 12 feet 6 inches more to theCorinthian caj^ital. The parapet contains twelve compartments, in two ofwhich are the royal arms and the arms of Alierdeen. The other panelscontain medallions of the Stuarts, beginning with James i. Montgomerybuilt the cross conform to a model made of timber and pasteboaixl. Hereceived for the work the sum of £100 sterling, the town paying for thestones and carriages. It is a favourable example of this kind of structure, and does creditto the man who was both its designer and builder.
