Fig. 1366.—Culcreuch. View from South-West. sides (see View), made probably at the end of the seventeenth century. At the time when this was erected, various alterations were necessarilymade on the keep, such as opening doors of communication between theold and new buildings, closing up doors, windows, and slits, and enlargingthose that were left in the older structure. The old staircase was entirelyremoved, and all trace of it obliterated, a handsome scale and platt stairin the new building supplying its place. * We are indebted to Mr. James D. Roberton for bringing this castle under ournotice, and for the plans and descriptive notes regarding it. FOURTH PERIOD — 256 ~ CULCREUCH The keep (Fig. 1367) measures 41 feet long by 28 feet 9 inches broad, and is four stories high. The height to the top of the gabled roof isabout 47 feet.

FIRST FLOOR GROUND FLOOR Fig. 13G7.—Culoreuch. Plans. The entrance door is in the north end of the east wall, which is hereabout 9 feet thick. It leads into a passage, which contains a recess on CULCREUCH 257 FOURTH PERIOD either hand, as seen on Ground Plan. The recess in the angle may havecontained a stair, or perhaps there was no communication between theground floor and the floor above, and the main entrance was on the firstfloor. From the entrance passage a second door, secured with a slidingbar, leads to the two vaulted cellars on the ground floor. The hall occupies the whole of the first floor. The fireplace is in thesouth end, and is modern. In the west wall (at A on the Plan) is theambry shown in Fig. 1368. It appears originally to have been enrichedwith a bead and hollow moulding cut in stone, and finished with an ogee-shaped arch; but at the time of the additions already referred to thewalls of the hall were lathed andstrapped, and the original simplemoulding was added to
