ssess the characters of a distinct genus, in tlieclassification of the exotic Nocturnal Heterocerous Lepidoptera; its elongated body and wings giveit an analogy with some of the Sphingidse, as well as to some of the prominent moths, especially toLeiocampa Dictcea; the structure of the antennse of the male is verj similar to that of the genusSmerinthus as well as Hammatophora bucephala, but they are more robust towards the tip, in thespecies before us, than in the latter insect. The veins of the fore wings are nearly arranged as inLeiocampa Dictcea, with the exception that the small branch emitted from the subcostal vein near thetip of the wing in the last named species, and in a great number of the allied British genera, is notperceived in the species before us, in which respect it also agrees with Smerinthus ; the antennje ofthe female are very short and simple, and the spiral tongue is rather elongated. The flower represented in the plate is the Chinese pink, Dianthus chinensis. 2.5

The first notice of the type of this very anomalous group of insects appeared in a note appended toa paper of mine in the Ibth number of the Zoological Journal, (pubhshed in 1S30,) in which Iregarded it as a connecting link between the Prionidse and Lucanida;, agreeing with the former in itsgeneral appearance, short trigonate advanced mandibles and moderately long antenna:, whilst in theinternaUy produced structure of the three terminal joints of the antennae it agrees with Lucanus;obsenang, moreover, that the joints of the tarsi are eylindric (as in the latter), but the insect isheteromerous ! Shortly afterwards a figure of the type Trictcuotoma Childicnii was pubhshed from a drawiug ofmine in the plates to Griffiths edition of the Animal Kingdom, and M.
