Summary

[edit]
Description
English: So the tale goes like this. During archaelogical works in 1996 workers dug up a container. It had originally been found in 1921 and the container bared a plaque proclaiming "The enclosed leaden casket containing a heart was found beneath Chapter House floor, March 1921"

No one's really sure whose heart it is but some believe it to be the heart of Robert the Bruce. Such splitting up of organs after death was common in that era and indeed Robert the Bruce wanted his heart to go to Jerusalem, however it never actually got there and it ended up being buried under the altar at Melrose Abbey.

Those that dispute it was the Bruce's heart comment on the fact that it was found in the Chapter House rather than the altar burial in the Chapter House - such an important heart would never have been in the Chapter House and as such it's probably some very high up monks heart. However no one knows for sure - certainly there's no DNA of Robert the Bruce on profile and there are no other hearts recorded as being buried at Melrose. Whose heart this is, sadly we'll never know.
