Cheer after cheer went up, while Rob wavedhis hat exultantly and yelled back at his friends. Nothing like that leap for life had ever beenwitnessed before. The amazed cattle, cheated of their prey, wav-ered, and the leaders tried in vain to check them-selves. Desperately they dug their forefeet intothe edge of the gulch, but the treacherous lip ofthe chasm gave under their weight, and with aroar and rattle, a cloud of dust and a despairingbellow, four of them shot over the edge and van-ished. Rob could not repress a shudder as he pattedhis buckskin, and realized that but for the littlesteeds noble effort he might have shared the fateof the dumb brutes.
