For somereason the engineer had a presentiment that sometrouble was brewing, so seizing his pistol he steppedto the side of the cab and peered into the darkness.It was too late; the fire through the open furnacedoor reflected his actions distinctly and in a mo-ment the engineer realized that he was looking downinto the fatal depths of four navy revolvers and heand the fireman were forced to surrender and keepquiet. At the same time the two robbers took possessionof the engine, two others, with the same mask ofred handkerchiefs, boarded the express car, while theother five commenced discharging their pistols inorder to intimidate the passengers. The expressmessenger ma^e an effort at resistance, but he wasstruck a desperate blow on the head with a pistoland then forced to deliver up the keys to the Wells^Fargo & Co.s safe.
