Range: Breeds throughout the United Statesand most of Canada; winters from centralUnited States to South America. Habits and economic status: The kildeer isone of the best known of the shorebird family.It often visits the farmyard and commonlynests in pastures or cornfields. It is rathersuspicious, however, and on being approachedtakes flight with loud cries. It is noisy andrestless, but fortunately most of its activitiesresult in benefit to man. The food is of thesame general nature as that of the uplandplover, but is more varied. The kildeer feedsupon beetles, grasshoppers, caterpillars, ants,bugs, caddis flies, dragonflies, centipedes, spi-ders, ticks, oyster worms, earthworms, snails,crabs, and other Crustacea.
