s knee ; A boon, a boon, cries Little John, Master, I beg of thee. What is that boon, quoth Robin Hood, Little John, thou begs of me ? It is to burn fair Kirkley-hall,And all their nunnery. Now nay, now nay, quoth Robin Hood, That boon Ill not grant thee ; I never hurt woman in all my life,Nor man in womans company. I never hurt fair maid in all my time, Nor at my end shall it be ;But give me my bent bow in my hand, And a broad arrow Ill let flee ;And where this arrow is taken up, There shall my grave diggd be. 337 Bobm ^oofcfs Btatfc antr burial. Lay me a green sod under my head, And another at my feet; And lay my bent bow by my side, Which was my music sweet; And make my grave of gravel and green, Which is most right and meet. Let me have length and breadth enough,With a green sod under my head; That they may say, when I am dead,Here lies bold Robin Hood. These words they readily promisd him, Which did bold Robin please :And there they buried bold Robin Hood,Near to the fair Kirkleys.

H. Wavren del. JAMES THE KOSE. Of Michael Bruce, the author ofthis ballad, very little is known. Allan Cunningham, whoprefaces his collection of Scottish Songs with briefmemoirs of various writers, merely refers to him as ayoung poet who, though he died in the blossom of hishope, has received some compensation by the generalsympathy with which his name is regarded, and by thefame that his promise rather than his performance hasobtained. He was born at Kinnasswood, in Scotland, in1746 ; and — according to Campbell, in his Specimensof British Poets — his friends being persons in lowcircumstances, he had to struggle with poverty, which, together with constitutionaldisease, gave a melancholy turn to his mind, and influenced the character of hiswritings. For a short time he was engaged in the occupation of a village school-master, the fatigues of which probably shortened his life. He died of consumptionin 1767. His poems were printed at Edinburgh, in 1770, by the Rev. John Logan —him
