Text Appearing Before Image:
slender hut in fragments flew; But not a lock of Moys loose hairWas waved by wind, or wet by dew. Wild mingling with the howling gale,Loud bursts of ghastly laughter rise ; High oer the minstrels head they sail,And die amid the northern skies. The voice of thunder shook the wood,As ceased the more than mortal yell; And, spattering foul, a shower of bloodUpon the hissing firebrands fell. Next droppd from high a mangled arm; The fingers straind an half-drawn blade :And last, the life-blood streaming warm, Torn from the trunk, a gasping head. Oft oer that head, in battling field, Streamd the proud crest of high Benmore; That arm the broad claymore could wield,Which dyed the Teith with Saxon gore. Woe to Moneiras sullen rills! Woe to Glenfinlas dreary glen! There never son of Albins hills Shall draw the hunters shaft agen! Een the tired pilgrims burning feetAt noon shall shun that sheltering den, Lest, journeying in their rage, he meetThe wayward Ladies of the Glen. H. J. iownsend del. 251
Text Appearing After Image:
HE GAY GOSS-HAWK. Of this balladwhich we select from the Minstrelsy of theScottish Border, Sir Walter Scott informs usonly that it is published partly from one inMrs. Browns collection, and partly from a MS, ofsome antiquity penes edit; the stanzas appearingto possess most merit have been selected from eachcopy. It is, therefore, composed from these twocopies, and, no doubt, contains many emendations fromthe pen of the accomplished editor. Of its antiquitythere can be no question; and it is not improbable that it relates someactual occurrence. The leading incident — the conveying a letter underthe wing of a goss-hawk — is common enough ; and may have been theprelude to some such arrangement as that which the ballad records. Inallusion to the beautiful lines — The red thats on my true loves cheekIs like blood drops on the snaw —
