The brightestof them, Cuba, the Pearlof the Antilles, has been thevictim of two cruel andmercilesswars at her hands,waged with relentless bar-barity. We could not, as aChristian nation, help pro-testing against her inhumanityto a people whose home was sonear our shores.For thirty years the sounds ofwar had been silent in our domain,\- but justice demanded that we inter- fere in behalf of a people who are struggling against oppression,and in the noble cause of humanity. Spains cruelty and Spainsgreed are matters of history.

THE MAINE DISASTER. On the 25th of January the Maine, an American battleship,entered the harbor of Havana, Cuba, and anchored in her watersat a spot indicated by the harbor-master. The usual exchangeof salutes and formal visits expected between two powers, tookplace, and there was no apparent unfriendliness shown. Justthree weeks from that day, in the evening of the 15th of Feb-ruary, an explosion took place, which tore the boat to atoms,killing 266 of her crew and two officers. At once treachery was 367 368 THE FIRST GUN FIRED. suspected, but the American people was asked to suspend itsjudgment until the long and searching investigation which wasconducted by the naval board of inquiry was ended, when everyevidence was produced proving that the awful calamity was duewholly to Spanish treachery. This led to a severing of all diplomatic relations, which wasended by the Spanish ministers request for his passport. Spaindeclared war upon the United States on April 24, 1898, and ittook the
