This thought occurred to me when thepapers all over the country on the morning of September ist, EARTHQUAKE AT CHARLESTOWN. 335 1886, gave to the world an account of that dreaded convulsionknown as an earthquake, which had taken place the night pre-vious, just as the hour for retiring had come. The first inti-mation that the Signal Service Bureau at Washington city hadof this catastrophe was only a surmise. They knew that some-thing was wrong, for communication was not to be had. All thetelegraph wires were suddenly cut off. Without a momentswarning the city had been shocked and rent to its very foun-dation. Hardly a building escaped injury and almost a thirdof the city was in half or total ruins. The whole Atlantic coastwas more or less affected, and for leagues from the shore theocean was thrown in a turmoil.
