the partyrose to nis feet, castaside the blanketwhich covered his Win-chester, and, takingaim, fired directly atthe troop in front. Itwas a terrible on-slaught, and so suddenthat all were stunnedbut, quickly recovering, they opened fire on the enemy. Theposition of troops B and K would not allow their fellow-cavalry-men to fire, lest they shoot through the Indians and kill theirown men. Thcs the terrible duel raged for thirty minutes.Someone ordered Spare the women, but the squaws fought likedemons and could not be distinguished from the men. Theentire band was practically slaughtered, and those who escapedto the ravine were followed by the cavalry and shot down wher-ever found. The chief medicine man, whose incantations hadcaused the band to act with such murderous treachery, fell witha dozen bullets in his body. It is claimed that of the Indiansthere were but two survivors, one of which was a baby girl aboutthree months old, who has since been adopted by a wealthy ladyin Washington.

INDIAN SCOUT. CHRISTOPHER CARSON. 35* After the defeat of the Indians at Wounded Knee Creek,they were ready to close the conflict and make the best termspossible with General Miles. On the 22d of January there wasa grand military review in honor of the victory over the redskins.Ten thousand Sioux had a good opportunity to see the strengthand discipline of the United States Army, the end of the ghost-dance rebellion being marked by a review of all the soldiers whohad taken part in crushing the Indians. Thus passed intohistory probably not only the most remarkable of our Indianwars, but the last one there will ever be.
