Text Appearing Before Image:
. The pursuers finally reachedthe open country, found in which direction theblacks had crossed it, and then returned by aslightly easier and shorter route to their camp. It was evident that the blacks, who werewell acquainted with the country, had takenthe more arduous route, hoping thus to throwoff any possible pursuit of mounted men, atrick that could be traced to the cunning ofthe ex-police villain. It had also been re-marked that the few cattle which they hadwith them had been driven off at a tangentsome miles back. The horses were now led, driven, andtumbled over the narrower line of bouldersdiscovered; many delays occurring, owing tothe men having to extricate a fallen horsehere, to readjust a burst-open pack there.Eventually they reached the solid ground andhad to camp as night was coming on. The following morning, leaving one or twohands to guard the camp, the rest of the partyscouted ahead, and at last saw smoke issuingfrom a river bed which ran parallel to the Towering Rock.

PORTION OF LIMESTONE RANGE, CHILLAGOE. (Tu face p. lOO. Xn) THE REED BED l6l range but at some distance from it. Thetroopers now made a long detour wherebythey succeeded in getting between this rangeand the blacks camp ; meanwhile, Blake andhis boys moved up. The blacks on perceiving the troopers boltedon to the plain, but sighting Blake and findingthat they were cut off on both sides madefor the river bed, which was partly dry, andhid in the dense reeds. The jins remained in the camp knowingthat they would not be interfered with, andhere as was expected was found the spoilraided from the station; most important ofall, the clothes and accoutrements of the twomurdered white men. Dilly bags were foundto contain tinned provisions, powder and shotflasks, and manavlins of sorts, whilst rifles andshot guns w^ere lying about wrapped up forthe most part in possum skins. Now the blacks were trapped. The reeds, owing to the absence of wind, were so stillthat a rat might have been heard moving ha
