Black Police, for by this name the forcewas often known. In these reminiscences Iby no means rely entirely upon memory, forI still retain my old Queensland diaries, together with some official papers connectedwith the force in which I served. I will describe this force, together with thelife I led in it, more fully in subsequentchapters, and though I have some of my oldSlaters diaries to fall back upon, yet I canremember without external aid many scenes, incidents, and names of men connected withthose days better than I can sometimes callto mind events of last week and peoples namesof later periods. The Colony comprises thewhole north-eastern portion of the AustralianContinent. It may also be remarked thatsome of the settlements in the interior areover 600 miles from the capital, Brisbane. This will, perhaps, give some idea of theextent of country within her limits. The population on December 31st, 1867,was 100,000, and on December 31st, 1899,512,604. When the emigrants first came out underthe agency of Mr. Jordan, labour was in greatdemandâ
