Several excursionsI made with one or other of such practisedbushmen, outings which lasted for one dayor for three or four, according to circum-stances, taking with us rations, blankets, anda spare horse or two, and always a gun andfishing tackle. What good company werethese bush-mates socially, always cheerful andjolly, beguiling the camp fire period withsongs, recitations, yarns of the bush, andstories of other lands. Then the bush gamewe shot, birds we collected for skinningpurposes, and fish we caught in the lagoonsand Don River. It was whilst with St. George at St. Annsstation that I first saw an emu run downby a couple of kangaroo hounds. The birdhad gone down to drink at a waterhole. St.George had his hounds with him, and when,like a new chum, I remarked Now is thetime to bail him up, he said, No, wait tillhes filled, and we did ; so that when thehounds were slipped the unfortunate bird,being full of water, made a very poor show

V) CAMPING 65 of running and was soon pulled down. Wetook off his skin for a mat and a portion ofbreast for the pot, but I found the goodsalt beef of the station more to my taste.Regaining the Port, we joined a small partywhich was about starting in a south-westerlydirection to prospect both soil and water,the chief object of this little expedition beingto take up a bit of country, should circumstancesprove favourable. Knowing that the blacks were bad, wewere well armed. Making a late start, weconsidered it advisable to camp upon thefirst creek we came across, for we did notknow how far we might have to go to thenext water; and night was quickly overtakingus. As we afterwards discovered, the bedof the creek was very scrubby and quite dryfor miles up from where we camped. Immedi-ately above our waterhole there was a broadpatch of sand and then came the scrub,shading the bed of the creek. Below, thechannel disappeared in a gloomy ravine. Wemade our fire under a log close to the waterand
