After these came in greater numbers the first settlers whobuilt their homes near creeks and rivers where water, fire-wood and building timbers were convenient and accessible.About this time the Moravians came and located this oldtown of Salem, bought a large body of land which theysoon began to sell in lots and farms, and the country beganto rapidly grow in population. These Moravian people have been for more than a centurygathering up these various things now on exhibit at themuseum. And persons of the present generation can walkthrough the aisles, read the labels on these interestingspecimens, and study and learn the history of this portionof the United States for perhaps two hundred years ormore, better than can be found in books. —Harry L. THE BLACK AND GOLD 27 OR several days straggling bands of militia hadbeen passing through the little village of Salem.It was during that period of the RevolutionaryWar when Greene, closely pursued by Corn-wallis, was making his famous retreat across our State. Karl, look down the hill! There comes another bandof Red Coats, said a young lad, appearing around thecorner of the single Brethrens House. There the twoboys stood with wide-opened eyes, gazing longingly at theband approaching until the call of Herr Schmidt summonedthem back to their work. Just at that moment, the newswas brought that Cornwallis had crossed the Yadkin andwas nearing Salem. HoAvever, this stirred but little emo-tion in the breasts of the Moravian boys, since they wereaccustomed to take everything quietly. The little village itself seemed to speak peace and comfort.While the other settlers in the country around were suf-fering hardship in their pioneer homes, the Moravians wereenjoying the comforts of the old coun
