They again nested in 1895,but the male was, unfortunately, killed by flying against thetelegraph wires, the ring still remaining on its leg, and soproving its identity. Late nesting with this species is noted almost annually ;three instances were reported at Beverley in October 1885,one with young still unfledged on the 19th of the month ; andthe late P. Inchbald mentioned, in the Field of 5th November1887, a nest and young at Hornsea on the 7th of October.A few days later he was told the nest had been taken down, inconsequence of the warblings of the birds being consideredtokens of ill omen at so late a period of the year. At HighHarrogate, in the year 1905, I saw Martins feeding theiryoung in the nest as late as the nth of October ; on theI2th the young had flown, though it is doubtful whetherthey would be able to migrate, as a spell of severe coldweather immediately ensued. White and parti-coloured varieties are not uncommon ;Marmaduke Tunstall mentioned one of the former in August

SAND MARTIN. i6i 1781 (Tunst. MS. 1784, p. 76), and a pure albino, with pinkeyes, was noted at Patrington on 26th September 1880. The local names in general use are: Swallow, House Swallow,Window Swallow, and Martin ; while Eaves or Easin Swallowis a name applied to the bird in the Craven district. (An American Purple Martin (Progne purpurea, L.) wasshot at Colne Bridge near Huddersfield in 1854 (HobkirksHuddersfield, 1859, P- ^44) ^^t ^^ this distance of time, itis not possible to investigate the circumstance, and therecord is to be considered unreliable.) SAND MARTIN. Cotile riparia (Z.). Summer visitant, abundant in suitable localities. Probably the first notice of this species in the county isfound in Gravess History of Cleveland (1808), where it isenumerated in the list of migrants. Thomas A His, in 1844, referred to it thus :— Hirundo riparia.—Sand Martin—Common near Doncaster ; afew pairs are occasionally met with near Sheffield ; pretty frequent infavourable localities i
