wing. At the Teesmouth the breeding birds arecertainly summer visitors only, the first arrivals beingannounced with unfailing regularity during the latter halfof February. Pairing takes place about the middle of March,and nidification commences early in April ; the first lullsets of eggs are usually found in the middle of the month,and the majority in the first week of May ; in 1903 a fullclutch was discovered on the loth of April, the last beingnoted on the 28th of June. One pair of Teesmouth birds, atleast, produce clutches of five eggs, which are invariably ofthe same type, and have been found annually for severalyears in succession. Nests are occasionally found in quiteopen positions, like Peewits. As a rule one brood only is reared m a season, but,owing to disturbance by cattle, and harrying by predatoryRooks and Crows, a second set of eggs is very frequently laid.By the end of July the birds, old and young, are gatheredtogether in flocks, and towards the end of August have left

-%■ ^: SPOTTED REDSHANK. 635 the vicinity of their nesting quarters, the species being thenrepresented on the coast by immigrants from more northerlylatitudes. At Spurn large migratory flocks, often consisting ofhundreds of birds, arrive in September, while both there andat the Teesmouth considerable numbers remain throughoutthe winter ; I have known as many as thirteen killed at oneshot on the Tees Marshes in December. The return migrationtakss place early in April. At various other places, both on the coast and inland,too numerous to particularize, the Redshank occurs onmigration to and from its nesting grounds. The vernacular names are as follows :—Pool Snipe (Will. Om. 1678, p. 299) ; Reddy and Swat (Teesmouth) ; Red-legs (Sedbergh, and formerly in East Yorkshire) ; andThrattle is another name which I have heard applied to itby old decoymen in the Tees area.
