The nest is generally built in a hole in a bank; the birdwith claws and bill digs this hole from three to eight feetinto the bank; the eggs are generally laid somewherealong this channel, seldom at the extremity. The nest ismade of loose grass and feathers and is built during thelatter part of April. The eggs are from five to eight innumber, of a pure crystal white and measure one and athird by one inch in size. The birds spend the winter in the southern Middle andSouthern States, few wintering in New Jersey; they arefound in the Northern States during the warm weather,arriving about the latter part of March and not leavinguntil ice on the water puts a stop to the food supply. The Golden-crowned Kinglet isonly four inches in length; bill, one-quarter of an inch;upper parts, grayish olive, more ashy on the hind neck;crown black, with a yellow central stripe, in the middleof which is a brilliant orange patch; tail, dark brownishslate, with yellow olive edgings; wings, the same, withtwo whitish bars across the forepart; under surface ofthe body, light gray, tinged with olive; a whitish linecrosses the forehead and extends back over the eyes; thereis a dusky line from the base of the lower mandible, anda dark spot before the eye. The female lacks the brightorange centre to the yellow crown stripe. The nest, considering the size of the bird, is bulky; it isalmost invariably found in evergreen trees and is made ofmoss and lichens, the inside lined with fine bark, smallroots and feathers.
