oned pump, a series of hiccoughs preceding theboom. In New Jersey it is occasionally called the Dunkadoo f roni the sound it makes. When disturb-ed it rises with a kwa. Although it seems to spend mostof its time during the day in standing still it is not alto-gether a nocturnal feeder. It feeds principally on frogs,lizards and snakes. Bittern^ Z^eftsf.—Length, from twelve to thirteeninches; extent, sixteen inches; bill, one and three-quarterinches; head, black; back, greenish black; breast and belly,white; sides, pale yellow; tail, brown and yellow; upperwing, brown and slate; under wing, yellowish; legs,greenish and yellow; feet, yellow. Its lays from three tosix eggs—usually four—of a pale blue, one and one-fifthby one inch in size. The nest is built of grasses andplant stems among the rushes in the marshes. It breedsintemperate and tropical America, northward to Maine,and is a common summer resident along the New Jerseycoast, going to the Southern States and further south for

The general color is a rich blueblack, with the exception of the shoulder of the wings inthe male, which are a bright scarlet, and the legs, whichare brownish black. The female has no scarlet and pre-sents a rather mottled appearance, the belly being-streaked with white and the general plumage beingspeckled with bay, brown and white.
