the tip broadlyconvex. Head small, oblong, compressed; neck long and slender; bodyvery full, slightly depressed. Feet short, stout; tibia bare for a short spacebelow; tarsus short, a little compressed, covered all round with angularscales; hind toe very small and elevated, third toe longest, fourth longerthan second; all reticulated at the base, scutellate toward the end, theanterior webbed. Claws small, arched, rather compressed. Plumage close,compact above, blended beneath. Wings long, convex, the second quilllongest, the first and third nearly equal. Asyou advance farther toward the east and north, you find it breeding moreabundantly. While on my way to Labrador, I found it in the MagdeleineIslands, early in June, sitting on its eggs. In the Island of Anticosti thereis a considerable stream, near the borders of which great numbers are saidto be annually reared; and in Labrador these birds breed in every suitablemarshy plain. The greater number of those which visit us from still morenorthern regions, return in the vernal season, like many other species, tothe dismal countries which gave them birth. Few if any of
