ht, considerably compressed,acute; upper mandible with the dorsal line somewhat convex, the ridgerather narrow, the sides convex, the edges inflected, with the notches obso-lete, the tip acute; lower mandible with the angle short and rounded, thedorsal line ascending and slightly convex, the ridge rounded, the sides con-vex, the edges involute, the tip acute. Nostrils small, roundish, partiallyconcealed by the plumage. Head ovate; neck short; body moderatelystout. Tarsus rather short, compressed, with seven scutella; toes moderate,very slender, hind toe rather large, lateral toes about equal, outer adherentat the base. Claws of moderate length, very slender, extremely compressed,arched, tapering to a fine point. Plumage very soft, blended. Wings veryshort, convex, rounded, the third and fourth quills longest, the first andseventh about equal. Tail rather long, graduated, of twelve narrow roundedfeathers. In honouring so humble an object as this Finch with the name of Bach-man, my aim is to testify the high regard in which I hold that learned andmost estimable individual, to whose friendship I owe more than I can expresson this occasion. In the month of April, 1832, says my worthy friend, the gentlemanjust named, I discovered near Parkers Ferry, on the Edisto river, in thisState, a Fringilla which I had not seen before, and which, on investigation,I found had never been described. On searching for the same bird in theneighbourhood of Charleston, I discovered it breeding in small numbers onthe Pine Barrens, about six miles north of this city, where I obtained manyspecimens of it. This bird appears to be rarer in Carolina than it really is. It is in factoftener heard than seen. When I first heard its notes, they so nearly re-sembled those of the Towee Bunting, that I took it to be that bird:
