Perhaps the sand masks the feeling of the silk, and thus deceives predatory wanderers. The remains found in the nests indicate that this spider feeds chiefly on grasshoppers. These it would obtain by hunting along the cave walls, and it apparently takes them back to the nest to devour them in safety. From this fact, together with the coating of the tube with sand, its closure by a trap-door and the nervous behaviour of the spider, it is quite evident that, even in the darkness of the caves, there is some enemy against whom the spider must be perpetually on guard.
