The Americans determined toput an end to this by destroying all the cornand removing the cattle. Accordingly a de-tachment was sent to Hogs Island. Theyeffected a landing and were engaged in de-stroying the provender when they werefiercely attacked by a British foraging partyand a severe skirmish ensued. The British troops were aided by one ortwo armed vessels in the harbor. The fightraged until late at night, and a number ofAmericans were killed. They succeeded,however, in expelling the English from theisland, and completed their work of destruc-tion. Early on the following morning theprovincials discovered that one of the en-emys vessels had grounded during the night,and was abandoned by its crew. They im-mediately boarded her, and having divestedher of every thing of value, they returnedwith the cattle in triumph to their camp.The Americans made similar descent
