General Curtis com-plimented us on the field, and what was left of the Fourth Iowaheld their heads high that night, though a gloomy one for thosewho knew our situation. The next morning it fell to my lot toopen the battle with my artillery again, and for one hour we pouredit into them hot and heavy. We opened with thirty-two guns;they answered with as many, and such a roar you never heard.The enemy could not stand it and fled. Our whole army deployedin sight that morning and it was a grand sight with the artilleryplaying in open view. I had read of such things, but they werebeyond my conception. This closed the battle and we breathed free.I escaped most miraculously. A shell burst right in front of me,and, tearing away my saddle holsters and taking off a large piece ofmy pants, never even scratched me. Dodge Companions : On the ITtli day of July, 1864, General John B. Hood relievedGeneral Joseph E. Johnston in command of the Confederate Armyin front of Atlanta, and on the 20th Hood opened an attack uponShermans right, commanded by General Thomas. The attack wasa failure, and resulted in a great defeat to Hoods Army and thedisarrangement of all his plans. On the evening of the 21st of July, General Shermans Armyhad closed up to within two miles of Atlanta, and on that dayForces Brigade of Leggetts Division of Blairs Seventeenth ArmyCorps carried a prominent hill, known as Bald or Leggetts Hill,that gave us a clear view of Atlanta, and placed that city withinrange of our guns.
