The crypt in which he was buried remainedundisturbed for eleven years, from 1865 to 1876.when on election night of 76 a gang of Chicagocounterfeiters, turned grave robbers, made anattempt to steal the body. They had removedthe marble slab which covered the top whenthey were frightened by the appearance ofofficers and fled. Two of the gang were latercaptured and served prison sentences. The casket,Which they had partly removed, was replaced,and the marble slab put in position. It re-mained but six days, when fearing another at-tempt might be made, the authorities secretlyremoved the casket and carried it Into thecellar of the Memorial Building nearby.
